The Aasiaat local council established a museum committee in 1977, which would carry out the work of establishing a local museum in the town. Today it is based in the house of late member of the Danish Folketing, Frederik Lynge. Employees were hired on the 1st of May 1981, who were to be in charge of the registration of the collection and general operation of the museum. In 1989, the museum was given two more buildings, which are used as exhibition room and storage facility.
