ANINGAAQ R. CARLSEN/VISIT GREENLAND, 2020
The establishment of a museum in Qaanaaq started when a museum association was founded in 1979. The purpose was to collect items from the ancient culture and to try to get a building for the collections. The association’s wish was that Knud Rasmussen’s house could be moved to Qaanaaq and furnished as a museum. The house was originally erected in 1910, when Knud Rasmussen and Peter Freuchen founded the trading station in Cape York. The building was dismantled and reerected in Qaanaaq during 1986 and inaugurated in March 1987. Since 1987, Qaanaaq has had its own museum of local history, and especially during the 1990s exhibitions were built with a special focus on the local area.
