The Kangaamiut Museum opened on 27 May 2011 with the exhibition Images from Kangaamiut by photographer Preben Harkamp. The museum focuses on arts, crafts and tales from and about Kangaamiut, and the current exhibition includes paintings, birdskin wall hangings and carved figurines made of ivory and soapstone. The artists behind the works exhibited all have ties to the Kangaamiut: Esra Berthelsen, Aron Berthelsen, Mads Kreutzmann, Peter Rosing and Lauritz Larsen.
The museum, which has been a department of the Maniitsoq Museum from the beginning, is housed in the old merchant manager’s residence as well as a small stone house.
