Locals were behind the establishment of the first collections in Ilulissat in the late 1960s. The museum had its first board on 5 October 1972, and the association applied to the municipality to use the old vicarage where Knud Rasmussen was born in 1879. This was where the premiere exhibition opened on 22 April 1973. A peat shed was built and the old whale oil refinery was moved from the port area and placed here. A hunting and fisheries department was inaugurated on 23 July 1994. Today, the museum has several buildings with public access.
