The municipally owned Uummannaq Museum of local history opened on July 21st 1988. The opening featured Edvard Kruse’s collection of old hunting implements, an exhibition on the German polar explorer and geologist Alfred Wegener, an exhibition on the now abandoned settlement of Maarmorilik, various tools from European whale hunting and a kayak exhibition.

Over several years, writings with varying contents were printed from the museum, such as historical surveys of buildings from all over the municipality, interviews with elderly residents, reports of archaeological surveys and special writings on the history of the settlements. All of these were produced and copied in the museum office and subsequently distributed to the population.
