In 1990, the then Nuuk Municipality bought the estate of Niels and Karoline Lynge. The priest, poet and artist Niels Lynge died back in 1965, and since then, the widow Karoline lived in the house until her death in 1989. When the municipality took over the house, it was clear that the entire property and its contents were a piece of cultural history in their own right.
In cooperation with Nunatta Katersugaasivia, the contents were registered and the house furnished to be able to receive visiting guests. The house opened in 1995 as an exhibition venue, and it was the first museum owned by Nuuk Municipality
